learning denied part 2
Alright, here is my main problem with the situation that Patrick and his family unfortunately had to go through. I don't understand how the school system could justs blow off Claudia, Pat, an d Denny Taylor. I mean, they all did more than the amount necessary of research but apparently that didn't matter at all. Nothing seemed to be good enough for the school. Patrick was actually doing better than some kids in his class, but did they see that, no! Once he was possibly diagonosed with a disablity, thats all they cared about. Its funny how out of all the tests, they couldn't prove anything. They all contradicted themselves and so the only thing the tests did were to create pain for the family. It must have been so frustrating trying to stand up for their son but to not have anything accomplished. They tried so many different routes but the school district could careless. I don't understand how the experiences of others could just outweigh the observations of the school. I mean, Claudia, Pat, and Denny worked with Patrick one on one and got to see Patrick really working hard and accomplishing a lot. Whereas the school just looked through their window and observed Patrick. It's true you can learn a lot by observing, but you can learn so much more with interactions. It would have been really interesting to see what would have happened if they atually went to court. I can see it going either way. If the school had so much control over it now, what would make it different?
I am still in shock in how much control the school had. They "diagonosed" Patrick way in the beginning but they could never admit that they might have been wrong. Heaven forbid they might have made a mistake! It seems that ever since they made that diagonosis, they had it out for Patrick. Patrick could never do anything that was right. Another thing that shocked me was the fear in the teachers to step up and to say no, he doesn't have a problem. I just hope I would have the guts to stand up for what I know (or believe) is right. It is a fine line to cross, especially if you are a new teacher, but I hope I would be able to do it especially after reading all the pain and frustration the family went through. Why is in our nature to always want to be right?
